Optimal Match

My
name is
Kim Gruia and I am from Montreal, Canada. After 8 years in Mexico, I am
happy to call it my home. This is a very special country, and a
wonderful school, and I feel fortunate every time I look up at those
mountains or down at the smiling faces of our students. With this being
my ninth year at ASFM, there are a lot of familiar faces! Fourth grade was the focus of my attention for three years, but I then changed positions in 2003 and became the Optimal Match teacher for grades 3-5, as well as the Everyday Math lead teacher for Kinder-grade 5. After 5 years of dividing my time between OM and Math, I am now focused primarily on the gifted program at our school, namely the OM program, working with kids from grades 1-5, and supporting teachers as they aim to differentiated for the many needs in their classrooms. This is an exciting job shift and I am thrilled about the possibilities! This job is a gift I get to open everyday; the kids dazzle me with their creativity and eagerness too learn, and I love that every day, every year is different. We explore things like inertia, the human brain, Destination Imagination, the concept of value, and inventors and inventions, just to name a few...but we learn much, much more than that in all actuality. I am happy to say that we love tangents and dialogue and debate, and find as many chances to do so as possible! The goal
of Optimal Match is to empower the students with strategies to
creatively and critically interpret their world.
We aim to
move
beyond simply
experiencing other people's interpretations, and creating our own! It's
all about making
meaning of the world around us...and effecting change in the
world! Learning how to ask questions, how to seek answers, and
how to be comfortable with the wonder and ambiguity of just 'not
knowing yet' is all part of the package here in OM.
